These days I rarely bother with roaming packages or buying a local SIM card when travelling. I rely almost entirely on eSIMs—they’re cheaper, more convenient, and you can get connected before you even land.
I used Airalo quite a lot in the past, while on my most recent trip to Asia I bought an eSIM through Trip.com instead. It was even cheaper, and the coverage was quite decent.
Recently I came across a nice little freebie: anyone with a Visa card can claim a complimentary eSIM from GigSky.
The eligible destinations are:
- United Kingdom
- France
- Thailand
- United Arab Emirates
- United States
- Mexico
The offer is simple:
- Visa Infinite cardholders receive a free 7-day plan
- All other Visa cardholders receive a free 3-day plan
I gave it a try myself. Simply download the GigSky app, create an account, and add a Visa card. The option of a complimentary plan appears automatically.
Visa Infinite cards aren’t exactly common, but most of us probably have several ordinary Visa cards lying around.
The only downside is that the promotion only covers a handful of destinations rather than offering worldwide roaming, but for anyone travelling to one of the eligible countries, it’s certainly worth picking up.
