Thanks to Marriott, I’m guessing many of you Titaniums are already Japan Airlines Crystal members. JAL has just launched an incredibly generous award ticket promotion, so let’s take a look!
In short, until 31 October, selected routes and cabins can be booked for just 70% of the usual mileage cost.
- Guam: 9 October to 31 January, Economy & Business
- Taipei: 9 October to 31 October, Economy & Business
- Europe: 1 November to 28 February, Economy, Premium & Business (except Business Class on the London route)
- United States: 9 October to 28 February (excluding Boston)
First Class is excluded. The long-haul routes are the most interesting, with some of the discounted mileage rates coming in at:
- US, Economy Class: 18,900 miles
- Frankfurt / Helsinki, Premium Economy: 26,600 miles
- Frankfurt / Helsinki, Business Class: 38,500 miles
- Paris / London, Premium Economy: 28,000 miles
- Paris, Business Class: 39,900 miles

The main downside is that the taxes and fees are pretty hefty. Also, it seems JAL doesn’t allow you to search for connecting award itineraries?
As for earning JAL miles, there aren’t that many options. You can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points at a rate of 60,000 Marriott points = 25,000 JAL miles.
Alternatively, you can earn a large number of miles fairly quickly by booking prepaid hotels through Rove, which happens to be running a 50% transfer bonus to JAL at the moment.
The good news is that award availability for this promotion looks very generous. You can also redeem partner programmes such as Finnair, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines through oneworld, although the mileage rates won’t be nearly as attractive.
