Shangri-la 50% bonus on point purchase (31% off dining)

Shangri-la has recently launched a sale on point purchases – as far as I’m aware, this is the first time ever Shangri-la runs a promotion like this, so you can see how badly the hospitality sector is hit by Covid-19.

The landing page is here. Now through 31 July, all point purchases, no matter what amount, will get a 50% bonus. The maximum number one can buy is 10,000.

The standard price is $13 for 100 points, which translates into 150 points under this promotion.

The value of Shangri-la’s Golden Circle points is very well defined. Very few people would redeem them against free nights at hotels because of the bad ratio. The most common use is for dining – every 10 points is equivalent to $1. And if you are a Jade or Diamond member, that becomes $1.25. Note that you don’t need to be a staying guest to redeem your points.

Therefore, buying points now and use them towards dining means 11% off for Green members, and 31% off for Jade and Diamond.

This may not be as good as it sounds though, as we all know how hotel restaurants can be overpriced. Especially in some countries they tend to sell heavily discounted coupons or set meals etc, so even at 31% it may not be a great bargain.

That said, if you fancy an afternoon tea at the Shard it could be a way to save some money. The Ting restaurant is notorious for playing games though, so be ready to fight for the 25% bonus if you are an elite member…
