Today, let’s look at a rather niche promotion, which is also a useful little trick for hitting credit card spending targets.
The Hong Kong version of Trip.com is running a Mid-Autumn Festival promotion. Until 6 October, new users can buy a gift card worth at least HK$1,999 as their first gift card purchase and receive an extra HK$50. You can purchase up to two qualifying gift cards. Here, “new users” means anyone who hasn’t purchased a gift card through Trip before.
In other words, you can buy HK$4,000 worth of gift cards and receive HK$100 in bonus credit, effectively giving you an extra 2.5%.
The gift cards can be used for pretty much all services on Trip.com and can also be transferred to someone else. If you pay for a booking in a different currency, the gift card balance is converted using the current exchange rate.
The promotion itself isn’t particularly exciting. The main point is that this is a useful option to keep in mind:
- You can choose to pay for the gift card in any currency
- Trip.com can be used to book flights, train tickets, hotels, attractions and more, so there are plenty of ways to use the balance
- The gift cards are valid for three years
This can therefore be useful when you need to hit a credit card welcome bonus or another spending target.
For example, the recently launched Currensea Lufthansa card and Currensea Marriott card both require spending in currencies other than GBP to complete their respective requirements. Buying Trip.com gift cards is one of the few relatively quick ways to generate non-GBP spending.
