Last month I shared some great news: British Airways had significantly reduced the cost of redeeming China Southern Airlines flights, with tickets starting from just 6,500 Avios. The only downside at the time was that only economy class was available, but now it gets even better: business class redemptions are live too!
Here are some example prices (including taxes and fees):
- Guangzhou – Ho Chi Minh City: 18,500 Avios + £56.2
- Beijing – Hong Kong: 24,500 Avios + £13.5
- Guangzhou – Singapore: 24,500 Avios + £67.1
- Beijing – Moscow: 68,500 Avios + £100.2
- Guangzhou – Istanbul: 85,000 Avios + £99.7
- Guangzhou – Budapest: 85,000 Avios + £230
- Guangzhou – London: 102,500 Avios + £252.8
The full redemption chart is as follows:
| Distance (miles) | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|
| 1–650 | 6,500 | 14,000 |
| 651–1,150 | 10,000 | 18,500 |
| 1,151–2,000 | 12,500 | 24,500 |
| 2,001–3,000 | 14,500 | 43,000 |
| 3,001–4,000 | 23,000 | 68,500 |
| 4,001–5,500 | 28,500 | 85,000 |
| 5,501–6,500 | 34,500 | 102,500 |
There is unfortunately also a downside. Previously China Southern opened its full award inventory to BA, so many many tickets were bookable. It has all changed now with the business-class inventory rollout, and availability is much scarcer.
That said, the real sweet spot for using Avios on China Southern is short-haul economy anyway, and these business class redemptions aren’t particularly great value.
