Marriott: 2,500 bonus points, Aeroplan conversion offer

Two quick Marriott Bonvoy airline partnership updates.

First up is Air Canada. Until 31 October, you’ll get a 15% bonus when transferring Marriott Bonvoy points to Aeroplan:

  • The standard transfer ratio is 3:1
  • For every 60,000 Marriott points transferred, you receive an additional 5,000 Aeroplan points
  • The bonus points are also eligible for the 15% promotion bonus
  • In other words, 60,000 Marriott points = 28,750 Aeroplan points

A quick recap of some of Aeroplan’s redemption sweet spots:

  • Middle East – Europe, Business Class: 40,000 points
  • Short-haul Asia, Economy Class: 8,000 points
  • Short-haul Europe, Economy Class: 7,500 points
  • Short-haul Europe, Business Class: 12,500 points
  • Asia – Europe, Business Class: 92,500 points

Aeroplan generally doesn’t charge fuel surcharges, and adding a stopover costs just 5,000 points. Overall, the points can be quite valuable.

Marriott Bonvoy points have always been a useful source of airline miles, particularly for programmes that don’t have many other transfer partners. Aeroplan also runs points sales fairly frequently, although the really good discounts don’t come around quite as often. So if you have a healthy stash of Marriott points sitting around, this one is worth considering.

The other promotion is with Singapore Airlines:

The reward isn’t particularly exciting, and there’s one very important catch. If you have Marriott Gold status or above, linking the two accounts will immediately trigger Singapore Airlines’ status challenge.

So if you haven’t done the challenge before and might want to take advantage of it in the future, don’t let a measly 2,500 Marriott points cost you the opportunity. Think carefully before linking the accounts!
