Delta’s annual mileage giveaway through 12Status is back again! In a nutshell, Delta sponsors an American football team from Washington State, the Seattle Seahawks, and every year before the new season they run this promotional campaign. For example, if you fly Delta from Seattle, even as a general member you can enjoy Group 5 (Main Priority) boarding.
But the real highlight is the free miles. After registering for the promotion, you earn one bonus mile for every yard the Seahawks throw (I have no idea what that means) for during the season. Of course, the exact amount depends on how well the Seahawks perform this season, but based on previous years, the final total should be around 4,000 miles.
There are two requirements to participate:
- Your IP address must be in Washington State in order to access the 12Status website
- Your Delta account address must also be in Washington State
And yes, Washington State, not Washington, D.C. Don’t get the two mixed up.
The first requirement was only introduced last year, presumably because there were too many of “Washington immigrants” taking part in previous years. If your IP address isn’t in the right place, you’ll simply see a message saying the promotion isn’t available in your region. But that’s hardly a major obstacle 😉 I managed to get it working without any problems.
I’d recommend checking whether you can change your Delta account address to Washington State first, and only then worrying about the IP address. One important warning, though: if you change your Delta address from outside the US to a US address, the requirements for earning and retaining Delta status will become more difficult. Changing it back can also be troublesome. So if you care about your Delta elite status, don’t sacrifice the bigger prize for a few thousand free miles.
If this is your first time participating, you’ll need to create an account on the 12Status website. This is separate from your Delta account. If you’ve participated in previous years, you simply need to log in on the promotion website and you’ll automatically be registered again.
As for what to do with the Delta miles, the nickname “SkyPesos” exists for a reason. There aren’t that many particularly good redemption opportunities, but a few of the better ones include:
- Japan – South Korea: 7,500 miles
- Asia – Europe: 80,000 miles in business class
- Europe – Turkey / Caucasus: 15,000 / 25,000 miles
- Europe – Middle East: 25,000 / 42,500 miles
Four thousand miles isn’t exactly going to get you very far, but Delta miles never expire, so I’ll take the free miles and worry about how to use them later!
