Finnair recently launched a status match offer, but the scope is quite limited, so I didn’t rush to cover it earlier.
- Only for SAS Eurobonus members residing in Sweden
- Apply by 23 April
- Must purchase a Finnair flight departing or arriving in Sweden, travelling by 30 September
- Silver → Silver, Gold and above → Gold
Applications need to be submitted by sending the required documents to the email address listed on the webpage. Residency and flight requirements aren’t too hard to work around. The bigger issue is that not many people still have SAS status these days.
Even if you don’t plan to actually take the flight, you could book a ticket for travel by 30 September just to apply. That’s essentially spending under £30 to “buy” five months of Oneworld Sapphire status.
Do note that if you cancel the flight or fail to fly, the matched status will be revoked.
There’s actually another promo that may be more useful: register as a new Finnair member by 31 May and set your address to Sweden, and you’ll receive 1,000 Avios (credited by 8 June).
Finnair’s Avios programme is interoperable with airlines like British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways, so opening an account is worthwhile anyway.
