United price drop: intra-Asia flights for 5k miles

(Deal back, but no stop is allowed anymore)

United had a lot of pricing changes a few days ago – many bloggers were raging about “a major devaluation”. It looks more like a result of United’s trials in my view, and we can actually see some positive changes in the latest development.

In short, certain routes in Asia that are under 800 miles cost only 5k now, one-way in economy. It appears that mainland China, Japan and South Korea are somehow grouped into one region – 5k was the standard pricing for domestic flights in Japan.

Tokyo to Seoul for example, used to cost 8k miles and we already thought it was a good deal:

The new pricing mechanism benefits China-Japan flights the most, if such itinerary is under 800 miles. For example Shanghai to Fukuoka:

And it doesn’t matter how many stops you have in between.

I’m not sure if it will be the new fixed cost going forward, or United’s system is still stabilising. If you happen to be flying one of these routes, you should consider booking your flight now.
