We knew that Virgin was going to start a 40-year anniversary sale today. It turns out they’ve made some mistakes again this time, in our favour. I woke up to hundreds of messages on my Wechat!
The offer page is here, in short you get 40% off all reward redemption on Virgin-operated flights until the end of this year. In reality however,
- The discount works on next year’s flights too (UPDATE: fixed)
- The Shanghai route is more like 60% off, not 40%!!
Here’s what you pay for PVG-LHR in standard season:
- Economy: 6,000 points / 12,000 points + 888 RMB
- Premium: 10,500 points / 16,500 points +1,565 RMB
- Upper Class: 22,500 points / 28,500 points + 1,719 RMB

22,500 points for Upper Class is insane, and the fees on this route is still quite reasonable – for LHR-PVG you’ll pay £200 more which is fair considering the hefty APD.
Not sure what’s the matter with Shanghai as Virgin made a similar mistake last time as well. I expect they fix the pricing today so lock in your reservation soon!
