Virgin has two loyalty programmes: Flying Club, operated by Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin Red, which covers the wider Virgin Group. The main difference is the range of businesses covered, but points can be transferred between the two programmes.
Virgin Red has long offered referral bonuses for new members, and the latest promotion is the best one yet!
- Sign up via my referral link by 30 November
- Earn at least one transaction credit within 18 months
- Both you and I will receive 6,000 bonus points
The standard referral bonus is only 1,000 points, so this is a particularly generous offer. You’ll need a UK or US mobile number to register, and remember to use a UK address.
There are plenty of ways to earn points, including buying train tickets, purchasing wine, renting cars and shopping through Virgin’s online shopping portal. Note that, according to the terms, transfers from partner loyalty programmes do not count as qualifying activity.
The quickest option is probably to buy a train ticket, although you’ll need to download the Virgin Trains Ticketing app. Simply purchase a £1 train ticket – you don’t actually need to travel, if you know what I mean! You’ll also earn an additional 9 points per pound spent. If you have a Railcard, the ticket can be even cheaper. According to reader reports, even tickets costing less than £1 can qualify for points.
Virgin Atlantic is a member of the SkyTeam alliance. Although its own route network is relatively limited, you can redeem points for flights on partner airlines.
For example, Air France and KLM awards within 600 miles cost just 4,000 points:
Most other partner airlines, including SAS, Korean Air, China Eastern, Xiamen Air and China Airlines, charge just 5,500 points for flights within 500 miles:
The only real inconvenience is that some partner airlines, including China Eastern and China Airlines, require you to book award tickets by calling customer service.
