Finnair is running a very lucrative Avios sale at the moment:
- Offer valid until 16 November
- Get discounts ranging from 30% to 50% when purchasing Avios
- Earn an additional 10% of the Avios purchased as tier points (TP)
To qualify, you must have been a Finnair Plus member before 30 October and have at least 50 Avios in your account. The latter shouldn’t be a problem: you can simply transfer some Avios from your British Airways account. I’ve tested it and can confirm it works.
Let’s start with the value proposition. Buying at least 85,000 Avios gets you the full 50% discount! You can also change the currency using the selector at the top of the page, and prices vary considerably depending on which currency you choose. Japanese yen (JPY) appears to be the cheapest option:
At the discounted rate, you pay an amazing 0.79p / 1.06c per Avios! Despite Avios having been devalued several times in recent years, and despite there being plenty of ways to earn them, this is still an incredibly attractive price, which we’ve almost never seen.
One thing to bear in mind: Finnair Avios expire after 18 months, although account activity can extend their validity. I’d therefore recommend transferring your newly purchased Avios to your British Airways account rather than leaving them sitting in Finnair Plus.
If you purchase at least 150,000 Avios, you can also earn Finnair Silver status, equivalent to oneworld Ruby.This comes with benefits when flying with airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, British Airways and Qatar Airways, including free seat selection, business class check-in counters and priority boarding.
The benefits aren’t particularly extensive, but they’re certainly useful. British Airways’ free seat selection seven days before departure is a good example. And since the status comes as a bonus on top of the Avios purchase, there’s not much to complain about!
