One of the sweet spots for airline frequent traveller programmes is flying from Hong Kong, where taxes and fees could be very low. Hong Kong used to ban carrier-impose surcharges some years back, and although it’s no longer the case, some airlines still honour it.
British Airways is on that offers the advantage. I flew back to the UK from Hong Kong in early April this year, for 55,000 Avios + £40 using a credit card voucher, and I even managed to get a tax refund afterwards.
Well, the good times are over. British Airways has finally fixed this loophole.
When searching for flights from Hong Kong to London, the taxes and fees still appear remarkably low on the flight selection page:
But click through to the next step, and the taxes and fees suddenly skyrocket to £349.50!
It’s disappointing, but it was only a matter of time. Make the most of these sweet spots while they last!
