Another familiar face returning with a points sale is Virgin Atlantic. Through March 31, you can receive a tiered bonus on points purchases as follows:
- 5,000 – 24,000 points: 20% bonus
- 25,000 – 69,000 points: 40% bonus
- 70,000 – 124,000 points: 60% bonus
- 125,000 – 200,000 points: 70% bonus
The pricing has remained consistent across recent sales, but the main drawback is the high threshold required to unlock the maximum bonus. Note that a £15 transaction fee applies to every purchase. With the 70% bonus, the cost comes out to approximately 0.89p per point, which is as cheap as airmiles usually go.
If you have a new virgin account, you must have at least one account activity (could be a credit card or Marriott transfer) before you are eligible to buy points.
Best Uses for Virgin Points: The “sweet spot” for Virgin points remains short-haul redemptions on SkyTeam partners. You can refer to this guide on how to search availability.
If your dates are flexible, you could also score decent deals on their Premium or Upper Class cabin to many destinations, although the surcharges may not be entertaining. We were the first to discover their pricing error between Germany and South America, but that has been fixed (took them a looong time though.).
The main hassle is that a few partners (e.g. Air Europa and China Airlines) still require calling customer service to book.
