Turkish Airlines 6 Continents Challenge

Turkish Airlines teased about an upcoming challenge a couple of day ago, the details of which have now been revealed.

  • Book and fly between June 27 and October 27
  • Fly with Turkish Airlines to all six continents to qualify
  • On million miles will be credited to those who qualify in November
  • Must be operated and marketed by TK
  • Award ticket doesn’t count
  • Retroactive claim doesn’t count
  • Fifth freedom route doesn’t count

SAS’s millionaire challenge turned out to be a huge success last year, and other airlines are trying to replicate it. We have Etihad which turned out to be an absolute joke, whereas Turkish Airlines seems to be much more reasonable here.

TK’s challenge might come across as being easier than SAS at first, but you are misled by the title. Yes you only need six destinations in theory, but in reality:

  • IST – D1
  • D1-IST-D2
  • D2-IST-D3
  • D3-IST-D4
  • D4-IST-D5
  • D5-IST-D6

You still need minimum 11 flights to complete the challenge, excluding the positioning flights at the beginning and the end. I think it’s more difficult and costly than the SAS challenge, unless you are based in IST and can spread out the trips comfortably across multiple months.

It’s also quite strange that they don’t accept retroactive claims, since we all know missing credit isn’t uncommon even when you’ve provided the right frequent flyer number in the first place.

SAS handled their promotion really well but TK on the other hand isn’t known for their customer service, judging from the stories told by my friends. It would be interesting to see how the promotion pans out in the end.

If you want to give it a try, don’t forget to sign up to TK’s Gold status challenge campaign. You will definitely fulfill the requirement for a two-year extension of your Gold status.
