Virgin “sale”: Germany – South America in business class for 42K points

There are so many news to share of Virgin Atlantic lately! They had a Shanghai error fare last month, released loads of award seats a couple of days ago, and our reader @ZZ spotted another very interesting pricing error.

  • Routes: Germany – South America
  • Airlines: KLM, Air France
  • Price: 42,000 points in business class per way

KLM and Air France fly to Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich etc in Germany, and to Bogota, Lima, Santiago, Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires etc in South America.

42K points is no doubt a steal for such a long flight, but unfortunately fees are pretty high at over €/$500:

Exceptions are flights departing from Brazil, where the surcharge is only $50 due to local regulations.

(EDIT: as pointed out by a reader ex-Lima flight has a low $80 tax which is also very decent.)

This is what we call a true bargain, and a return would cost just 84,000 points + $258. Personally I’d choose Air France over KLM, as their A350 business class looks very impressive.

Note that Air France and KLM now charge for seat selection in long-haul business class, which is waived for Skyteam elite members. I called Air France to add my ITA Executive membership number and then was able to choose the seat for free.

Interestingly, the ticket is issued in O class, which credits up to 100% into a few programs including Delta and Malaysian Airlines.

If you are swayed, Virgin Atlantic currently has an offer on buying points: buy at least 100,000 points in one transaction and you’ll earn 70% bonus points. The cost is as low as 0.89p per point which is pretty good.
