We covered the best Marriott redemptions in the UK in the last post, and to complete the picture I want to also shed some light upon Europe, as well as a few popular destinations nearby as well 🙂
Again, before we start: Marriott Bonvoy has eight redemption categories at the moment, and the number of points required for standard / off-peak / peak are as follows:
The following recommendations are not in any particular order.
1. Germany – Roomers Baden-Baden Cat 5 / 35,000 points
Unfortunately it is no longer in Category 4 – this hotel was once the best place to use a 25,000 free night certificate in Europe.
Still, Roomers Baden-Baden is probably the best Marriott property in Germany, and a room night usually charges €250 or more.
2. Germany – Courtyard Bremen Cat 2 / 12,500 points
Despite being just a Courtyard, this hotel is one the of best in Bremen for its excellent location and restored historical building, and has been on my to-go list for a while!
3. Italy – Eremito Hotel Cat 4 / 25,000 points
Eremito is a retreat in the Umbrian hills that combines historical masonry techniques and modern technology. A room night here sells for £250+.
4. Switzerland – HUSS Hotel Cat 5 / 35,000 points
This is one of the two very popular Design Hotels in Swiss mountains. The other one – Cambrian – is usually regarded as a superior property, but since it’s in Cat 7 redemption doesn’t yield as good value.
5. Switzerland – Courtyard Basel Cat 3 / 17,500 points
17,500 points is very cheap for a hotel in Switzerland, even if it’s just a Courtyard. The only issue is its location in the outskirt, so it may only suit those who drive.
6. France – Marriott’s Village d’lle-de-France Cat 4 / 25,000 points
This is a resort in proximity to the Disneyland Paris, and 25,000 points is a good deal.
7. Spain – AC Hotel Valencia Cat 2 / 12,500 points
A solid hotel in Valencia near the beach. I’m hoping to stay here in October. Shame it’s no longer Cat 1 🙁
8. Spain – AC Hotel Alicante Cat 2 / 12,500 points
Very centrally located hotel in Alicante.
9. Spain – AC Hotel Gran Canaria Cat 2 / 12,500 points
An economical option for a holiday in Gran Canaria. I have to say I really like this stock photo of their swimming pool 🙂
Similar hotels according to online reviews. I stayed at the Sheraton which was, hmm, acceptable.
11. Serbia – Courtyard Belgrade City Centre Cat 2 / 12,500 points
The Metropol Palace used to be a top redemption spot in SPG times. Nowadays the Courtyard may have become a more reasonable option if you want to spend points.
12. Bosnia and Herzegovina – Couryard Sarajevo Cat 2 / 12,500 points
Bosnia is still recovering from the unfortunate history of wars, and there aren’t many options when it comes to international hotel chains in the capital. I stayed at the Swissotel when I visited it last year.
I walked past the Courtyard a couple of times. It looked very new, and is ideally located for tourists.
13. Ukraine – Aloft Kiev Cat 2 / 12,500 points
I don’t understand how hotels are priced in Kiev – the international chains are very expensive compared to the country’s economy, whereas the other hotels and bnbs are super cheap.
I stayed at the Intercontinental (on a pointbreak) which was very nice. The aloft could be a more budget option, although the location is not as good for tourists.
14. Belarus – Renaissance Minsk Hotel Cat 2 / 12,500 points
Well, 12,500 points seems very cheap for a five-star hotel in a country’s capital…
15. Turkey – JW Marriott Ankara Cat 2 / 12,500 points
This is probably one of the best Marriott redemption out there in the entire world, and I still don’t understand why its category never got raised. For only 12,500 points, you are getting a room worth more than 200 euros, and this is a very modern JW Marriott!
16. Morocco – Le Meridien N’Fis Cat 2 / 12,500 points
I stayed here as SPG Gold when visiting Marrakesh a few years back. The hotel itself is very old and no better than just passable, but if you don’t like the idea of staying in a Riad this Le Meridien can offer you better comfort.
17. Qatar – Doha Marriott Hotel Cat 2 / 12,500 points
A solid five-star hotel near Doha airport. I was going to stay here after reading the positive reviews on flyertalk, but switched to Al Najada in the end after luckily winning an auction 🙂
18. Kuwait – Residence Inn Kuwait City Cat 2 / 12,500 points
I have never been to Kuwait but the country seems to very pricey. I’m listing this hotel here simply because of the high cash price (£150+) – same with the Courtyard Kuwait City too.
Marriott has thousands of hotels in Europe so this list is by no means exhaustive, but I hope it gives you some inspiration at least!
