One of the biggest perks of American Express Platinum and Centurion cards is their extensive airport lounge access (I summarised this a few years ago<\/a>). In addition to Priority Pass, they also partner directly with Plaza Premium and several airlines, and of course operate their own Centurion Lounges, including a brand-new one opening soon at Shanghai Hongqiao<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Unfortunately, according to multiple reports, these lounge benefits are about to be devalued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Centurion Lounges<\/strong>: From 8 July, Platinum cardholders can only bring one <\/em>guest for free (currently two). The guest must also be on the same flight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Lufthansa Lounges<\/strong>: From 1 October, the partnership with Lufthansa Group will be terminated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The first change isn\u2019t too surprising. Since Centurion Lounges were introduced, overcrowding has steadily worsened – especially in the US, where benefits were cut earlier. This time it’s the turn of international cards, but the adjustment isn\u2019t overly harsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The second change, however, has a bigger impact, particularly for those based in Europe. If you live in Germany or frequently travel there, you could previously access Lufthansa business class lounges with a Platinum card when flying Lufthansa Group airlines, without needing Star Alliance Gold status.
