{"id":11864,"date":"2022-03-30T19:09:19","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T18:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/?p=11864"},"modified":"2022-03-30T19:09:20","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T18:09:20","slug":"marriott-flexible-point-redemption-is-now-live-and-you-may-want-to-rebook-some-reward-nights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/2022\/03\/30\/marriott-flexible-point-redemption-is-now-live-and-you-may-want-to-rebook-some-reward-nights\/","title":{"rendered":"Marriott Flexible Point Redemption is now live, and you may want to rebook some reward nights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you have searched for any Marriott point bookings today, you may have seen some odd prices like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-london.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-london.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11865\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-london.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-london-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-london-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-london-520x292.jpg 520w, https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-london-720x404.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/2022\/03\/04\/remember-to-lock-in-your-marriott-reservations-before-march-29th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Remember to lock in your Marriott reservations before March 29th\">Marriott&#8217;s <em>Flexible Point Redemption Rates<\/em><\/a>, a.k.a dynamic reward night pricing has just kicked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a reminder, here&#8217;s what happened:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Marriott hotels no longer have redemption categories<\/li><li>For reward stays in 2022:<ul><li>Globally 217 hotels have adjusted redemption rates, which means they may require more points than the previous cap imposed by the respective category<\/li><li>Other hotels won&#8217;t cost more than what its peak pricing used to be<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>For reward stays in 2023: there won&#8217;t be any caps for redemption rates<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a Category 1 hotel used to cost 4,500\/7,500\/10,000 points on off-peak\/standard\/peak dates, and now it can cost anywhere between 4,500 and 10,000 points. However, unlike previously when there&#8217;s some sort of pre-defined distribution, you may see the most popular hotels constantly cost 10,000 points, whereas the least desired ones hover around 5,000 points throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s have a look at London. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/2022\/03\/04\/my-review-of-london-marriott-county-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"My review of London Marriott County Hall\">Marriott County Hall<\/a> which I really loved is now priced near the top mark (100K) almost all the time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-county-hall.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-county-hall.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11862\" width=\"600\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-county-hall.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-county-hall-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-county-hall-768x636.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/st-pancras-renaissance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Renaissance St Pancras<\/a> on the hand, still have some 40K dates in April, which is close to the original off-peak pricing (36K).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-st-pancras.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-st-pancras.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11863\" width=\"600\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-st-pancras.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-st-pancras-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marriott-dynamic-redemption-example-st-pancras-768x633.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Marriott&#8217;s pricing algorithm is more similar to IHG than Hilton, or in other words the redemption rate is somehow linked to the cash price but there isn&#8217;t a fixed formula. This is good news, but obviously things can change in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the data points I&#8217;ve seen in various forums, the trend is popular hotels are priced towards the top end whereas other hotels have actually become cheaper, which could be a welcome change. Maldives has suffered greatly, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/w-koh-samui\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">W Koh Samui<\/a> and Tokyo (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verylvke.com\/tokyo-prince-gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Prince Gallery hotel<\/a>) are less expensive now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My friend who&#8217;s developed a tool for monitoring IHG reward prices has come up with some interesting stats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Summing up the redemption rates of all Marriott hotels in China, the total has dropped 6.35% on March 30 compared to March 29<\/li><li>Out of the 30 most-searched hotels, only 6 have increased in average redemption rates<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you currently hold any point bookings, check the rates again as you may save some points by rebooking.
