Back in September, Star Alliance launched an unprecedented promotion to retain customers from its ex-member Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). It looks like South African Airways has decided to have its own status match program.
The landing page is here but you’ll need to log in to your account to view it. You only need to provide basic personal details plus a screenshot of your digital membership card to submit an application.
The list of recognised airlines is quite long, including but not limited to:
- Virgin Atlantic
- United
- SAS
- Aegean
- Lufthansa
- Singapore Airlines
- Turkish Airlines
- Air Canada
- Avianca
- ANA
- Air China
- Emirates
- Etihad
It’s a very strange mix of airlines – at the top of the list you see South African Airways itself, and then a high percentage of the names are their Star Alliance partners which is unexpected for a status match offer. British Airways is noticeably missing, but there are British Midland and US Airways….
It seems that someone put this list together at total random. There’s also no offer detail on the landing page, although on Statusmatcher there are a few data points seemingly confirming match success (to Gold) after just one day, and the status is valid through 2025.
Star Alliance Gold status comes with substantial benefits. If you have say an expiring Lufthansa Senator membership, you can take advantage of this offer to extend your status indirectly by one year.
Just submitted a request based on Senator. Fingers crossed…
Me too. Haven’t heard from them though
Just received a survey (??) I don’t think we’ll gonna be matched 🙁
Got that survey too! Haven‘t heard anything else from them yet. Sounds like they just closed our cases.
I just got an e-mail from them saying I should reapply via the *A match page.
I think SM is not happy about SA doing it’s own in-house match. That’s my guess.
They’re just overwhelmed with the too many applications I think…
